THE DRIFFIELD TOWN TRAIL (2020)
The Driffield Town Trail (2020) was completed largely as a Covid activity at the initial request of members of the Driffield U3A Local History Group, who were looking for someone who was prepared to edit and develop an original Driffield Town Trail (1981), by David Neave (about 7000 words on A4 sheets, printed black and white) and illustrated with a number of sketches by Eugene Fisk. This new paperback, bound edition, incorpoates around 25,000 words in an A4 format, 120 pages, and 146 photographs (some black and white). Coloured photographs are included of all buildings referred to in the Trail.
The Driffield Town Trail is a structured tour around the centre of Driffield that allows individuals or groups to examine street scenes, interesting vistas and individual buildings in a particular sequence. By the end of the tour you will have learned, or reviewed, many things about the history of Driffield and its architectural heritage, and reflected on events and people who have helped Driffield to develop from a largely rural community in the eighteenth century to the town it is today. Individual buildings are used to refer to many aspects of social history that have affected Driffield: the development of education; electoral reform, welfare, health and security, policing and planning controls, economic cycles, and the roles of key men and women in the development of Driffield. There is much in the book that is of interest generally who are interested in the social history in England.
The Driffield Town Town Trail has been well received in Driffield and Harry has given many talks on the Trail to local U3A and Probus groups and to the Augustinians in Bridlington.
