I N WATSON'S WAKE: What is it all about?
IN WATSON'S WAKE recreates the world of Blackburn, Accrington and the Ribble Valley in the 1960s.
Entrepreneur, Jerry Watson ploughs his way to business success and he is seen by many as a genius.
Mike Harrison , a joiner, then salesman, finds success in Watson's wake, and he is attracted to Watson's wife
and to other women.
What Mike Harrison doesn't know is that Jerry Watson has a secret past in Palestine in 1946: a past that is
about to catch up with him.
IN WATSON'S WAKE is also a story about FOUR strong-willed women asserting their rights in the then man's world:
Barbara Watson, Jean Harrison, June Ainsley, and Rachel Wayland.
A fast-paced plot that starts in Palestine in 1946, then quickly moved into 1966 and new ideas about high-pressure
cold canvas selling to small shopkeepers and later to selling prefabricated houses to local authorities, where dodgy
inducements are offered to town councilors.
IN WATSON'S WAKE is inspired by the real-life success of entrepreneur, A N Waterhouse, and by his company, Shopfitters (Lancashire) Ltd; a company that started in Accrington after the Second World War. (By the 1960s, it was based at Rhyddings Mill, Oswaldtwistle, and employed a salesforce of 80 and a large manufacturing force. However, please note that A N Waterhouse was never involved with timber-framed housing, or with local authority personnel, and also that Jerry Watson is a totally fictitious character.)
